A real summer in law – Alexander's story
What is it like to go from studying law to working on actual cases at a business law firm? For Alexander Persson, his time as a summer trainee at Lindahl's Helsingborg office has offered a mix of legal challenges, new friendships and a few unexpected perks - such as ice cream breaks and a book club.
"This is really a way to experience what it's actually like to work as a proper lawyer," he notes.
Real cases and new experiences
From day one, Alexander was given substantial tasks across several different areas of law, including M&A, dispute resolution and construction law.
"For example, I've drafted defence statements, carried out legal research and been involved in compulsory share acquisitions - something you barely encounter during university. It's been both educational and enjoyable."
Beyond client work, he has attended practice group meetings and internal training sessions, giving him a broader understanding of the firm's working methods and culture.
A typical working day
Alexander's days begin around 8:00-8:30 with emails, coffee and planning the day's tasks. After mornings filled with meetings and desk work, lunches alternate between communal meals and lectures, where Alexander has attended presentations on topics including GDPR, employment law and dispute resolution.
"The lectures have given us insight into what it's like to work in different legal areas at the firm and what being a lawyer actually entails."
Afternoons continue with work, often alongside other summer trainees. Around 15:00 there's usually a break to chat with colleagues from other teams over coffee or perhaps an ice cream. Days typically finish around 16:30 or 17:00, and Fridays often end with an after work.
Camaraderie and openness
What has perhaps surprised Alexander most is how welcoming the culture is.
"The best part has been how approachable everyone is. I've really felt there's space to learn and ask questions - whether to a junior associate or a partner. It's a very down-to-earth atmosphere."
A first step into legal practice
For Alexander, the summer has confirmed that business law is the right path, though the future remains open.
"I want to become the best lawyer I can and work at a business law firm. Where that leads, time will tell. Right now, I'm just pleased I can combine law with business - and still find time for CrossFit and sport."
Alexander confirms that working as a summer trainee is one of the best ways to gain insight into practical legal work.
"It's also a chance to explore what you ultimately want to do - or what you don't want to do."
If anyone reading this feels inspired to apply for a summer traineeship or position at Lindahl, what should they bear in mind?
"Show genuine interest in your application and make it personal. It's obvious when someone has just changed the recipient's name. It needn't be anything major - have you attended an event, spoken to someone from the firm, or read news about Lindahl? Mention it!"
