How I use AI in my daily work as a lawyer
AI is no longer the future – it is everyday reality. Johanna Karlsson, lawyer and senior associate at Lindahl, talks about how AI tools such as Legora have become a natural part of her workflow and what difference it makes, both for her and for clients.
In 2024, Lindahl made a strategic decision to invest in the AI platform Legora and roll out the tool to the entire firm. All 300+ employees – lawyers at all levels and within all specialisations as well as the entire business support team – were given access to the tool. The purpose was clear: to free up more time for strategic advice and create greater value for clients.
Johanna Karlsson was one of those who got to be involved from the start.
From parental leave to AI pioneer
Johanna Karlsson works primarily with commercial contracts and employment law at Lindahl. When the firm was choosing AI tools in 2024, she was part of the test group – perfect timing as she had just returned from parental leave.
"I felt that I needed to learn the tools to keep up with developments. We tested several tools and received a number of briefings and training sessions, which gave me a real head start. Then I forced myself to actually use Legora in practice and to try out different functions. AI then quickly became part of my daily working method," Johanna explains.
AI in everyday work – from proofreading to complex analysis
Johanna's use of AI spans a broad spectrum of tasks. She uses Legora for everything from proofreading and summarising larger documents, to asking questions about complex contracts, translating emails and texts, reformulating contract or email drafts, and making comparisons between different documents or versions.
One concrete example that stood out was when Johanna received a large contract package to familiarise herself with at short notice.
"I wanted to quickly get an overview of the structure and how the documents related to each other – Legora could do this quickly and efficiently. It helped me to get started with my work more quickly and identify the relevant issues."
Greater value for clients
When Johanna reflects on the greatest benefit of AI tools, it is clear that it is about client value, not about taking shortcuts in the work.
"The greatest benefit is that we can analyse large amounts of information in a very short time, identify patterns and receive support in routine tasks. This frees up time for us to focus on what really requires legal expertise and strategic thinking, in order to give our clients the best possible advice."
For clients, this means concrete advantages: faster responses and more cost-effective advice, whilst quality is maintained or even improved. AI is therefore not a way to work less, but a way to work smarter – where the lawyer's time and expertise can be applied where it does the most good.
"It is a tool that fits into many parts of the workflow, but it is always we lawyers who make the assessments and take responsibility for the result," Johanna explains.
A firm investing in the future
Johanna's experience is that Lindahl actively drives the AI work forward and supports employees in the development.
"We receive ongoing training in Legora and if you miss a live session, there is always the opportunity to take the training afterwards. You can really tell that the firm is investing in this and prioritising that all employees learn AI in a way that is relevant to their area."
Johanna's advice to future lawyers
For law students who are curious about AI, Johanna has a clear message:
"My advice is to seek help from and start using AI early as a tool that complements your legal expertise, but to continue developing your critical thinking and ability to verify AI-generated results. Focus on building a solid foundation in legal method, because AI can never replace legal understanding and professional judgement. See AI as an assistant that makes you more efficient, but remember that it is you as a lawyer who always has the final responsibility."
Working at Lindahl
